About Groups | Meet Our Team & Mission

A brief history

In 2014, Groups co-founder Dr. Jeff De Flavio opened the door to his office. He was there to help a woman who was HIV-positive and experiencing heroin addiction. Despite making progress during the first few months of treatment, she began to struggle with other substances.

These challenges helped Jeff realize that a more holistic approach was needed—one that went deeper than physical symptoms and addressed the broader social and emotional factors that shape recovery. He developed a model that combined evidence-based medication, group therapy, and whole-person support. The power of community became central to our care—and the inspiration behind the name Groups.

Today, Jeff serves on our Board of Directors, and the belief that inspired him from the beginning continues to guide our work.

Our Mission

Groups began with a clear mission: to change lives. At Groups, we help those seeking recovery from addiction find purpose and dignity through compassionate, collaborative care. We deliver high-quality treatment in underserved communities alongside our partners, public agencies, and health plans.

Together, we’re raising the bar in addiction health care. For more than 10 years, we've helped people recover through a proven model that combines medication, therapy, community, and ongoing social support. Today, we have more than 120 locations and provide care across more than a dozen states — with more communities coming soon. We've helped more than 100,000 people take the first step toward lasting recovery.

Our Vision

We strive to bring our powerful care model to communities in need as we transform the way society perceives the treatable disease of addiction. Our priority is to treat all those who need our help regardless of who they are, where they live, or how they prefer to access care.

Pillars of Treatment

Evidence-Based Treatment

We use the best and latest clinical data to inform how we support our members, so we can help them get the best outcomes.

Community

We believe in the transformative power of peer support, human connection, and compassionate accountability.

Whole-Person Care

We’re committed to helping each member achieve recovery that goes beyond sobriety, leading to fulfillment in every aspect of their life.

Our mission is to change lives

Improve quality of life

We help members rebuild their health, relationships, and daily lives — because lasting recovery means thriving, not just surviving.

Reduce stigma

Addiction is a chronic disease, not a moral failure. We're working to change the conversation and create a world where people feel safe asking for help.

Make high-quality care affordable and accessible

We accept Medicaid, Medicare, and most commercial insurance plans — and we're constantly expanding our reach so more people can access the care they need.

Help our members build lives they love

Recovery is about more than stopping drugs. We help members set goals, find purpose, and rediscover life beyond addiction.

Our Results

Our model works. Here's what the numbers look like for members who've gone through the Groups program.

Leadership

Our leadership team brings together decades of experience in healthcare, addiction treatment, and community care — all united by a shared belief that recovery should be accessible to everyone.

At its core, our mission is one of social justice, and that really speaks to me.”
